On the night of August 29, 1934, Officer William E. Wood, 64, was on duty in the Sheffield District. While at the residence at 6011 East 15th Street, he dodged to avoid being hit by a car but was struck by a fast moving car coming from the opposite direction and was fatally injured. He was taken to the Menorah Medical Center, where he later died on August 30, 1934. The driver who struck was believed to have been sleep deprived and possibly asleep at the time of the accident.

Officer Wood was survived by his wife and child.
