On February 8, 1932, Detective Carpenter, 56, and his partner interrupted an armed robbery of the Mercantile Trust Company at 14th and Grand. During the course of this incident, Detective Carpenter and a janitor were shot several times with a machine gun. The two suspects were able to escape. Detective Carpenter and the employee both died of their wounds.
