Officer
Craig Schultz was killed in a motorcycle
accident on I-29 while responding to an
accident. Officer Schultz was traveling
southbound on Interstate 29 responding to
a rollover accident on the highway when
he apparently lost control of his motorcycle.
Officer Schultz had notified a dispatcher
that he was heading to the scene of an accident
on southbound I-29 east of North Oak Trafficway.
At 12:08 p.m. Officer Schultz's emergency
button was activated, sending a distress
signal. Fire department personnel found
Officer Schultz at 12:12 p.m. on I-29 under
a bridge that is part of the Interstate
635 Interchange. His motorcycle was on it's
side in the left lane with the front wheel
facing south. It was determined that Officer
Schultz struck the guardrail after encountering
a slick spot on the roadway. He was pronounced
dead at the scene. Officer Schultz joined
the police department in 1990 and was 36
years old at the time of his death. After
several years working in other sections
of the police department, including accident
investigation, Officer Schultz requested
a transfer to the enforcement unit to ride
a motorcycle.
Officer
Schultz had been a member of the Kansas
City Police Department for 11 years, and
is survived by his wife and two young daughters.

The
family of a deceased Kansas City police
officer laid flowers Thursday near the spot
where a motorcycle crash Wednesday claimed
his life.
The
Kansas City Police Department blocked a
section of Interstate 29 near Interstate
635 to allow the family of Craig Schultz
to remember the 11-year veteran who died
on duty.
Officer
Craig Schultz, 36, is survived by his wife,
Chris, and their two daughters, Tara, 10,
and Heather, 7.
Karen
Petree, a police Care Team volunteer, said
a trust fund was set for Officer Schultz's
children. Contributions can be sent to Tara
and Heather Schultz, in care of the Kansas
City Police Department Credit Union, 2800
E. 14th St., Kansas City, MO 64127.
Funeral
plans also are set, Petree said. A visitation
is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at
Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 1600 N.
Missouri 291 in Liberty. The funeral will
be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial
will be at Mount Moriah Cemetery at U.S.
169 and Northwest 108th Street.
Petree
said the public could honor Schultz and
other slain officers at a memorial service
at 6 p.m. May 24 at police headquarters
at 12th and Locust streets.
Officer
Schultz died at 12:08 p.m. Wednesday while
traveling south on Interstate 29. He was
responding to an accident and apparently
lost control of his motorcycle. Police said
there was no indication other vehicles were
involved.
Police
on Thursday had not determined what caused
the crash. They continued to investigate
whether a slick spot on the road from oil
or antifreeze contributed to the wreck.
On
Thursday, police mourned Officer Schultz
by wearing black memorial bands over their
badges. They posted a tribute to him on
the Police Department's Web site at www.kcpd.org
Police
Capt. Rick McLaughlin said department counselors
were available to talk to officers.
They
are available for anything, but when an
officer dies, and you're doing the same
type of work they did, you think, `It could
have been me,' " McLaughlin said.
Officers
also mailed news clippings about Craig Schultz
to Kansas City police traveling to Washington,
D.C., for National Law Enforcement Week.
The officers are planning a memorial to
Schultz during the event, which begins Sunday
and honors slain officers across the country.
Several Kansas City officers left for the
event on their motorcycles a few hours before
Officer Schultz died.
