The night of January 21, 1924, Officer Barney Jasper was walking in Little Italy, when an unknown assailant ambushed, and shot him in the back. He was found in front of 518 Forest Avenue, where he had fallen. Police theory was that the assailant had hidden behind a tall fence at the address, and fired on him from that spot. No motive was known for the crime.Officer Jasper died on January 22, 1924.
