On April 12, 1968, Officer Bowman, 44, was attempting to subdue a mentally unstable person involved in a disturbance on Main Street between Amour and 36th Street during the 1968 riots and suffered a fatal heart attack. Officer Bowman was taken to General Hospital. The National Guard and Highway Patrol assisted in patrolling the city to maintain peace during the 1968 riots.

Officer Bowman had been with the Kansas City Police Department for 15 years joining the department on April 1, 1953 and was assigned to the Traffic Unit at the time of his death. He was a veteran of WW II and was survived by his wife and child. Interred: Clearfield Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.
